Dr. Katie Higgins, DVM

Dr. Katie Higgins is a self proclaimed Air Force brat, who has spent most of her life in New Mexico, between Alamogordo, Albuquerque, and Santa Fe. She spent some of her childhood in Guam, Alaska, and Germany, but eventually decided that New Mexico was home. She has wanted to become a veterinarian since she was about 10 years old, ever since getting and bonding with her first puppy. She graduated in 2013 from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque with Bachelor of Science in Biology and double major in German Language and Literature. She then worked as a veterinary technician in small animal practice before attending veterinary school. Dr. Katie completed her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph, Ontario, Canada, graduating in 2018. While in school, she focused largely on rural community and mixed animal practice.

After graduating, Dr. Katie moved back to New Mexico, and started practicing small animal medicine in Santa Fe, NM in 2018. Her interests in medicine can be described as eclectic, and include general surgery and dentistry for cats and dogs, wound treatment and management, backyard farm animal medicine, and exotic animal medicine. Her dream has always been to practice medicine in a mobile/ mixed animal/ rural setting. When the opportunity arose to help develop Rollin’ Paws Mobile Vet, Dr. Katie immediately and emphatically agreed. She is currently the practice manager for Rollin’ Paws- we are working together to create a general pet care model that fits your and your pet’s lifestyles, and to provide medical and preventative care in a comfortable and relaxed setting.

Dr. Katie strongly believes in the human animal bond, and believes that the best medical care incorporates that bond. Her approach to medicine focuses on communication and trust-building, so that your pet can get appropriate treatment and care in a manner that is feasible and affordable for you to implement.

In her free time, Dr. Katie enjoys mountain biking and camping in Santa Fe’s magical mountainous landscape, gardening, cooking, and crafting (of all types- sewing, macrame, felting, papier mache, etc, etc). She also enjoys spending time at home with her partner and their two cat-children, Quinn and Oberon, and two chickens Beulah and Penelope.

Katie is looking forward to bringing quality care to you and your pets!

Jarenda Ortiz, RVT, EUT

My name is Jarenda Ortiz, owner and founder of Rollin’ Paws Mobile Vet. I started working in veterinary medicine as a Customer Care Representative in 2014 and soon began training as a veterinary assistant. Soon thereafter, I started attending San Juan College to pursue a degree in Applied Science in Veterinary Technology. I completed the VTNE in 2018 thus becoming a Registered Veterinary Technician. My experience in veterinary medicine suggests long hours at a local walk-in basis veterinary hospital. I spent the last 7yrs learning from all of the intelligent minds in that hospital and have grown as a veterinary professional in many ways. My experience as a nurse includes floor supervisor, ICU, emergency medicine, radiology, laboratory, anesthesiology, dental prophylaxis and dental radiography, abdominal surgery of all sorts; spays and neuters, whelping mothers and dystocia surgery, mass removal, and limb amputations. My favorite part of my career is intensive care and emergency medicine. It truly makes my heart smile to see a patient go home after being in the hospital for intensive care.

In October 2020, I was elected as treasurer of New Mexico Registered Veterinary Technician Association (NMRVTA). As part of the association we have taken steps toward Title Recognition and Title Protection for Registered Veterinary Technicians in New Mexico, becoming a 501c6 organization, updating the constitution, and hosting an annual continuing education course.

In January 2021, I began the journey of building Rollin' Paws Mobile Vet. Through many phone calls to many different people, I was able to piece it together. I got certified as a Euthanasia Technician and continue to seek higher education. I want nothing more than to serve the community and most importantly veterinary patients.

I truly look forward to our adventures as a mobile practice and servicing our community.

Having a medical emergency?

CONTACT Road Runner Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Center at (505) 384-6420 located at

5 Camino Karsten, Algodones, NM 87001

We strongly encourage that you call local veterinary clinics before going over there. Due to the increase in medical cases and the national shortage of veterinary professionals, wait times are long. We are all working extremely hard to provide medical services, please be patient and polite.

What do you do?

Always explain the situation when speaking to a veterinary professional.

  1. Call your regular veterinarian

  2. Call emergency veterinary hospitals in Algodones and Albuquerque before going over there.
